The Cottage Bed & Breakfast

A three star bed and breakfast on Walker Drive in Decatur, with a kitchen, a garden and parking, and it works if you want to settle in rather than pass through. What decides it is whether you want a house with shared spaces or a plain room with nothing attached.

What you get

The Cottage Bed & Breakfast lists air conditioning, free wifi and internet access, free car parking, and breakfast, with special diets accounted for. Non smoking rooms, family rooms and a smoking area are named, along with a kitchen, laundry service, a terrace, a garden and a library. A supermarket is listed as nearby. The list is thin on the things a hotel normally leans on: no restaurant beyond breakfast, no bar, no pool, no gym. The honest reading is that the Cottage is a house with rooms, and it leans on its communal spaces rather than on services.

For someone staying here, that adds up to a slower kind of trip. The Cottage Bed & Breakfast gives you a kitchen if you would rather not eat out, a garden and terrace if you would rather not sit indoors, and a library if you want quiet. The supermarket listing matters more than it sounds, because it means self catering is workable. This suits families, people on longer stays, and anyone who wants Decatur at a remove from the centre. It does not suit a business trip that needs a concierge, a bar or a lobby, and it does not suit anyone who wants the centre of Decatur on the doorstep.

Where it puts you

Decatur is its own small city six miles out, with a square, a rail station and the best restaurants-per-capita in Georgia. That rail station is on the Blue and Green lines, so you can reach the rest of the system without driving and without a transfer at a downtown hub. The square, the station and the surrounding streets are the walkable part, and they hold most of what you would come here for.

This is off the loop, so the BeltLine trail is not on your doorstep; the trail label reads off the loop. Suits anyone who wants a self-contained town with a rail link and a real restaurant scene. Does not suit anyone who wants to step out onto the BeltLine or be in central Atlanta.

Booking it

Book direct if you want the kitchen and family rooms, since those are the reasons to choose this house over a plain room in town. Most rooms here can be cancelled free, and you book them through app.impt.io. Every confirmed booking removes one tonne of CO2, at no extra cost to you. Five percent of what you pay comes back as IMPT credit, out of the hotel commission rather than added to your bill.

How we know this

Asked often

The Cottage Bed & Breakfast, specifically.

Where is The Cottage Bed & Breakfast? +

It is on Walker Drive in Decatur, Georgia, 2.5 km from the centre of Decatur. That puts it outside the middle of town rather than in it, which is the point of staying here: you get parking, a garden and quiet, and you accept that the centre is not on your doorstep.

What does the property actually have? +

Breakfast, a kitchen, free wifi, free car parking, air conditioning, family rooms, non smoking rooms, a laundry service, a terrace, a garden, a library and a supermarket listed nearby. There is no restaurant beyond breakfast and no bar, so plan on self catering or going into Decatur to eat.

How do you get around from Decatur? +

Decatur station is on the Blue/Green line, so the rail connection into the rest of metro Atlanta runs from the centre of Decatur. The property sits off the loop, which is Decatur's own trail and path network, so walking and cycling routes reach the centre without a car.

How do I check availability? +

Go to app.impt.io to see which rooms are open and to book. Most rooms can be cancelled free, and the booking is confirmed straight away. If you need a family room or a kitchen, check that first, because those are the listings that decide whether the Cottage fits your trip.
