This page explains what happens to the money after you book, because it is not obvious and it is easy to distrust. Booking a room through this site does two things a hotel booking normally does not: it funds a tonne of verified carbon removal, and it returns five per cent of what you paid to an account you control. Neither is a surcharge, neither is optional, and neither is a box you have to remember to tick at checkout. Both come out of the commission the hotel pays for the booking, which is money that would otherwise stay inside the booking chain.

How it works

Four steps, in this order. Nothing in them is optional and none of them needs anything from you beyond the booking itself, which is the point: an offset that depends on the traveller remembering it is an offset that mostly does not happen.

01 step You book at the rate on the page Rooms open on app.impt.io at the rate you saw here, or better, with free cancellation on most of them. Nothing is added to that rate for carbon, at checkout or afterwards. No cost The rate is the rate. 02 step One tonne of verified CO₂ is funded Every confirmed booking funds a tonne, whichever IMPT site it was made from. It is funded booking by booking rather than averaged over a year or bought in bulk at the end of one. Per booking Roughly one short-haul return flight. 03 step The credit is retired against a registered project The tonne is matched to a project on the register below and retired there, so the same tonne cannot be sold or counted twice. Each project carries its location, its registry identifier and its vintage. Retired Listed further down this page. 04 step Five per cent comes back, and you spend it Five per cent of what you paid for the room returns to your IMPT account as credit, out of the hotel commission rather than your bill. You pick which project it funds: reforestation, renewables, waste to energy. Your choice Held in your IMPT account.

That is the whole mechanism. One booking, one live rate, one tonne retired against a named project, and five per cent back for you to point at the next one. Nothing else is asked of you and nothing is added to what you pay.

Buy or gift verified offsets

You do not have to book a room to fund a tonne. Both vouchers live in the IMPT app and neither depends on a stay.

Worth keeping the two apart: the offset on a booking is funded by the booking, and the vouchers are a separate thing you can buy or give away. A stay does not need one.

How we know this

The mechanism on this page is IMPT’s, and the register below is read from IMPT’s own project API rather than retyped: the names, categories, countries, vintages and descriptions are theirs. We do not print a price per tonne, because this site does not sell credits. What this site is responsible for is the neighbourhood ranking the booking came out of, and that method is published in full.

Credits are retired against registered climate projects: biogas and biomass on farms, forest restoration and REDD+, wind, solar, hydro and bio-based construction. Is the offset included in the price? +

Yes. It is funded by the booking itself, so there is nothing to add at checkout and nothing extra to pay. The rate you see on this site is the rate the room opens at on app.impt.io.

How much is offset per booking? +

One tonne of verified CO₂, on every confirmed booking, whichever IMPT site the booking was made from. It is per booking rather than per night or per room.

What is the five per cent? +

Five per cent of what you paid for the room, returned to your IMPT account as credit. It comes out of the hotel commission rather than your bill, and you spend it on the carbon project you choose.

Which projects are the credits from? +

Registered climate projects across several categories: sustainable agriculture, forest restoration, wind, solar, hydro and eco-construction among them. The current register is listed on this page and the full one is in the app.

Can I buy offsets without booking? +

Yes. The Carbon Credit Voucher starts at $40, is delivered instantly by email and does not depend on a stay.
